A kilometre of Hedgerow at Docking Farm in Norfolk

We were awarded a contract by Homes England to plant and maintain 915 meters of hedgerow at Docking Farm in Attleborough, Norfolk.

Forming part of a new development, this site will eventually become home to many new inhabitants.

The hedgerow will create a natural boundary between the development and the neighbouring farmland.

An outline of something great

This hedgerow is made up of hawthorn plants (Crataegus Monogyna), which are perfect for any urban project.

Hawthorn is the single most used plant for hedging in the U.K., as they are not only very low maintenance, but they also provide both food and protection for many wildlife species.

Growing at a rate of roughly 1.3 to 2 feet (40-60cm) per year, and planted in staggered rows of 5 plants per meter, these plants will grow to form a thick hedge.

Fun fact: a stand-alone hawthorn tree (usually in a field, encircled in large stones) is referred to as a “fairy tree” in folklore, as they are believed to be under the protection of fairies.

Removing them is believed to cause bad luck, as the fairies may seek vengeance for the killed tree.

Maintenance

As part of this project, A.G.A. Group has been contracted to provide watering and maintenance services for the first 12 months after planting.

Whilst the adult hawthorn is a very low maintenance tree, they do require - and deserve - care and attention whilst getting acquainted in their new home.

Each plant is planted with a supporting cane and spiral guard. They are planted at 50cm depth and covered with mulch.

During the maintenance period, they will be watered, have their mulch topped up, and have weeds removed.

Ensuring that the plants are well established is a hugely important undertaking - but with nearly 4600 plants, it’s no small task!
