Electro-fishing Case Study: River Roding fish survey

Team effort is needed when electro-fishingThe A.G.A Group were recently asked to carry out a fish survey on a tributary to the River Roding in Essex to assess the species present and population characteristics (size, weight, age). Two separate channels of the tributary were sampled using electro-fishing, two anodes from a boat mounted generator and control box with a trailing cathode. The fish sampled were then compared to assess if habitat and river characteristics were having an impact on fish health and quantity.

A statistical test was then applied (Sample T-Test) to gauge if there was a significant difference in the fish found in each section of the tributary. This type of statistical comparison analysis can be invaluable for managers in understanding the complex dynamics of river and lake systems before putting in place management strategies to enhance and preserve these systems.
