Survey Case Study: Cannon Hill Common – Silt survey

needs annotationThe A.G.A Group was approached by the London Borough of Merton Council through its agent Groundwork London to address siltation issues at the Cannon Hill Common pond. It was understood that through natural processes the pond contained a large quantity of silt and water levels were reducing year by year due to erosional inputs to the aquatic system. The A.G.A Group carried out a full silt survey of the pond and found the initial assessment to be correct; the pond was indeed impacted upon by large quantities of silt.

The report was presented with data shown in graphical representation for ease of understanding. It was agreed with the client that a number of remediation actions must be taken to redress the situation. The prescriptions offered by the A.G.A Group focused on how to put this excess of silt to good use in a sustainable fashion without the need to landfill the material (as is often the case). Instead the material was used to construct a reedbed Silt depth at the site in relation to water level.habitat in one section of the pond which would help to facilitate natural processes of the pond and to re-profile the bank-sides of the pond to allow more sunlight into the margins to stimulate aquatic vegetation growth.

These sustainable solutions to fairly commonplace aquatic problems have enhanced the site and allowed for a natural equilibrium to return to the pond. By utilising natural environmental tools such as carefully chosen vegetation the need for ‘hard’ engineering solutions was negated. This ensured the ponds ecology was improved and the siltation issue addressed while protecting the aesthetic and diversity value of the site.
