Survey Case Study: Watford Piscators – Management plan

Overhanging tree canopy impacting on the ecology of the lakeThe Watford Piscators contacted the A.G.A Group after some concern regarding the angling quality at the site. After initial consultation the Society requested a full management plan to assess the current situation and suggest remediation measures to improve the angling at the site. The assessment involved a holistic approach, giving consideration of all aspects of both the aquatic and terrestrial environment which could be adversely affecting angling at the site.

After extensive surveying of the site a plan was formulated to meet the requirements of the fishery, the plan largely involved addressing environmental conditions. Such factors as tree shading and lack of marginal vegetation along with high stock levels were leading to poor water quality and fish stress.

The non-native and invasive species Japanese knotweed found throughout the siteThe site was also heavily infested with the invasive species Japanese knotweed (F. japonica) which was out-competing native plant species. Prescriptions put forward by the A.G.A Group included the reduction of shading around the lakes, the introduction of aquatic vegetation and off-shore features and a stock control programme. The A.G.A Group also put forward a number of options as to how best to eradicate the Japanese knotweed (F. japonica) without costly removal from the site.

By understanding and controlling the natural environment improvements can be made using sustainable techniques which will not have adverse affects on the ecology. Through using effective fisheries management and bio-engineering techniques solutions were found to enhance both the angling amenity and conservation value of the site.
